Urgent Surgery Needed to Save Z's Life and Sight

Z (Name shortened for her privacy) is a courageous young girl from El Salvador facing a critical and potentially life-threatening medical crisis. She urgently needs specialized eye surgery that cannot be done in her home country of El Salvador and is best performed by expert specialists at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. Without immediate intervention, Z's condition could lead to her eye rupturing, endangering her life.

Z's Situation

Z's condition is severe, complicated, and rare. It is made more challenging by Z being without parents who can support her condition, but her care is being supported by Joe Hughes of JWAC. Her eyes each have separate specific conditions, one of which is glaucoma and one of the eyes is at risk of bursting.

Multiple doctors in El Salvador have evaluated her, each confirming the urgency and complexity of her case, but they lack the advanced medical technology and specialized expertise necessary to safely treat her. After consulting several specialists and obtaining multiple medical opinions, it's clear that Bascom Palmer represents her best and possibly only chance to treat her and attempt to restore some of her vision.

The specialists at Bascom Palmer have reviewed Z's medical reports and scheduled examinations beginning May 5th, with surgeries possibly occurring within the same week. A second evaluation is planned for May 12th, potentially followed by additional surgery. The priority for Z's treatment is to protect her life by addressing the immediate threat; secondly, specialists will try their best to restore or preserve her remaining sight.

We are so excited to have the opportunity to help people in Central America to better health! JWAC Foundation converted a used school bus to serve as a mobile medical clinic in 2022, now serving at Shalom Medical Clinic in Santiago Texacuango (San Salvador), El Salvador. It is assisting the people well, and now we are excited to have been given THREE existing mobile medical/dental clinics (like the one you see), donated to us by Medical Teams International (Portland, OR)!

These were units that they were taken out of service for mechanical reasons (two need engines, one a transmission), and they handed them to us for the purpose of restoring them and delivering them to three medical missions, in El Salvador and in Honduras!

We have people on hand here that are aware of all the restoration that needs to take place, we just need the funds in order to restore them to excellence, confident they will serve His children there for many years to come!

Think of the lives that will be restored to health, the hope that people who have no means to pay for good medicine can soon have! Many children have no vaccinations, many pregnant mothers have not seen a physician…now this can change!

The mechanical challenges come to just under $48,000 with replacements that have complete warranty, so will be strong and durable. Replacement as needed internally for healthy compressors, equipment for the dental operatories, exam tables for medical rooms, and generators to render power for all when not near a source for electrical connection.

Then there is the challenge of driving these three some 2,700 miles to the U.S. border near Harlingen, TX…then on some 1,700 miles further to as far as Tegucigalpa, Honduras!

We have volunteer drivers, bilingual experts, mechanics…nine of us lined up to offer our time to deliver these healing machines. Our target for over the border is mid-October. Working backward to all the steps needed to be able to meet those dates, we are in a serious time crunch to find the funds to complete the various tasks.
