Renewal Fund for DACAmented Student Dreamers
Friends & Family,
Since we moved to Chicago last year, I have been volunteering for HIAS — an organization that helps refugees rebuild their lives in safety and dignity — teaching classes to help refugees prepare for the US citizenship test, and helping to award scholarships to some amazing students in need. I am quite uncomfortable making asks like these, but in getting to know these families and bear witness to the richness and potential they weave into our societal fabric, I recognize the critical importance of the services HIAS provides, bettering all of us in turn. They need our help, much as we would in the same situation.
That is why next Sunday I will be competing in the Ironman 70.3 race in Madison (see you locals out there?!) and using the opportunity to highlight the important work that HIAS is doing to support and welcome these incredible families.
I am specifically raising funds for HIAS’ DACA renewal fund for Dreamers — young people brought to the US as children without documentation. Through the DACA legislation, these young people are now able to participate legally and to their full potential in our society. Among others, they serve as our teachers, our nurses, our soldiers, and as students pursuing opportunities in higher education. Every two years, these DACAmented students are required to pay $495 to renew their status.
These young people are part of my community. They are part of yours too. Supporting them is supporting a better collective future — and you can help make that a reality now. I would be eternally grateful for any dollar you can pitch in.
