Help a Puppy Feel Better
Congratulations! Jewels is now Rain and adopted by Carlos and Tommy, joining their iggy family officially. She came through surgery and rehabilitation beautifully thanks to their tender attentive care. Thank you to everyone who has followed and supported our sweet, wonky little lemon! And thank you to IGRF for saying yes to all her special needs!
2/3/2023 Jewel is having her spay surgery today along with images and recheck following her knee surgery recovery! Thank you for your support for this precious girl! Update Wednesday afternoon: The surgeon called to say that the procedure went well though with some changes to the original plan. Apparently her bones are so bowlegged that the osteotomy for the femur didn’t really turn out to be a good option. They did do the patellar repair, and he feels confident that it will hold! A good part about this is that she doesn’t have to recover from an osteotomy. She’ll be discharged tomorrow, and when she’s ready she’ll have physical therapy to encourage proper movement of those legs and build her strength up. Thank you so much everyone for your support and prayersDecember 2022: Big surgery day coming up. The Italian Greyhound Rescue Foundation is generously fulfilling their commitment to this little girl and providing the surgery that she needs to be able to move about and enjoy her life. This next procedure is $6,000to $7,000 to correct the malformation in the knee that has curvature of the femur and both medial and patellar luxation. November 2022 update: An evaluation with the orthopedic specialist revealed that she has not just a medial patellar luxation but a lateral one as well within the same knee and a curved femur that has to be surgically straightened before patellar luxation could hold. September 2022 update: Unfortunately Jewels’ medical journey is not complete. Her physical therapist, Nancy Doyle, identified wonky movement in Jewel’s legs. Subsequently it became apparent that she has patella luxations in both knees. Update Dr. Cooper, Jewel‘s neurologist feels that the risks of doing surgery on Jewel’s delicate, complicated neck malformation are far greater than any potential benefit. Fortunately, the time wearing the brace has caused the body to stabilize that area and so there’s not as much luxation now. She will still need to wear the brace during any medical procedures, and she’s not allowed to jump. But she can have a full, wonderful life. She’s going to go to physical therapy to help her gradually safely return to freedom of movement when the brace is coming off and in preparation for her spay surgery July 26 update: Today is a big day for our precious little wonky one! Jewel has been wearing a neck support brace for her atlantoaxial subluxation and aplastic dens formation. The hope has been for the body to stabilize itself so that she can avoid neurosurgery. The imaging today is both a CT scan and a dynamic movement x-ray to assess the subluxation. She will always have the wonky gait because that damage cannot be undone. But it doesn’t slow her down. Her devoted foster dads have done an amazing job at preventing any further injury. This has meant constant activity restriction and some medication to keep her calm because she is a puppy and does not know that one wrong jump or move to cause paralysis or worse. Jewels is a mere puppy. She likes to play, and doesn’t understand she has to rest after bouts with ataxia (impaired balance and coordination action) and neck pain. Her fabulous foster dad took her to the emergency clinic this week. They kept Jewels overnight, and now she needs an expensive imaging to diagnose the cause of her condition (might be trauma related, or a congenital condition - or most likely both). The neuro physician fell in love with Jewels too. She’s pretty sure this sweet soul will need neurosurgery. We want to help Jewels get the care she needs. This baby girl deserves a chance.
