MISSION: KILIMANJARO
Hey there!

On 13th August 2024, I will be hiking to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro backwards to raise money and awareness for the ethical treatment of porters on the mountain.

My mission is two-fold:

First, I aim to raise USD $50,000 for The Kilimanjaro Responsible Trekking Organization (KRTO) to support their efforts for ethical climbing.

Second, I will attempt to break a Guinness World Record for fastest summit of Mount Kilimanjaro at 19,400 feet of elevation, hiking backwards. The current record is at 72 hours.

Fight the fire on Mount Kilimanjaro
The funds raised will provide ground support by hiring porters and providing food and transport for them to join the ongoing efforts to get the fire currently raging on the southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.

On October 21st, there were initial reports of a small fire that had broken out on Kilimanjaro between Mweka and Karanga. While the government responded quickly, the dry conditions combined with high winds spread the fire quickly.

Hundreds of firefighters, park employees, and military personnel have been mobilized to fight the fire, but more manpower is urgently needed. This fundraiser has been created to maximize the manpower in an effort to control the fire as quickly as possible.

Funds will go to the International Mountain Explorer Connection (IMEC), a registered 501 (c) 3 that is partnered with the Tanzanian NGO - Kilimanjaro Responsible Trekking Organization (KRTO), which will facilitate the mobilization of mountain crew to assist the authorities with fighting this fire.

Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, through the Kilimanjaro Porters Assitance Project (KPAP). We advocate for fair wages, appropriate load weights, and enough food while working on the mountain. Our website contains a list of Kili climbing tour operators who follow ethical guidelines with their porters. IMEC also loans clothing to porters and offers a variety of classes.

This project supports and recognizes local climbing companies who adhere to IMEC's partnership for responsible tourism monitoring partnership program ensuring ethical climbing standards for crew on Kilimanjaro.
