International Breast Cancer Surgical Mission

Join us in supporting the International Breast Cancer Surgical Mission (IBCSM), a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides free breast cancer treatment for women and men in the Dominican Republic! All donations will make a big impact and help fund the surgery, anesthesia, overnight hospital stay, pathology screenings, biopsies, dressing supplies, medications, chemotherapy, bras, wigs, etc. to those we care for! Thank you in advance for your contribution to our cause. Here’s a little information on our organization and our mission:

According to the World Health Organization, Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in both developed and undeveloped countries. Of the 458,000 Breast cancer deaths each year, 269,000 of those deaths occur in middle to lower-income countries because women do not have access to early screening and treatment. The World Health Organization recommends education on early signs and symptoms, clinical breast exams, and mammography where available, as detection strategies. In many countries where preventative programs and education have not been undertaken, the task seems insurmountable.

The International Breast Cancer Surgical Mission (IBCSM) was founded in 2012 in response to a global need. IBCSM, led by Dr. Edna Kapenhas and in partnership with Island Impact Ministries, has been providing preventative breast cancer care for the first time on the North Coast of the Dominican Republic for over a decade. The team will be volunteering in the Dominican Republic to help others in need this upcoming March!

I am traveling to the Dominican Republic in February as part of the International Breast Cancer Surgical Mission Trip team. I will be providing anesthesia for women in need of breast cancer surgery. ALL donations go directly toward purchasing post surgical bras, wigs, medications, and chemotherapy. Our team pays for all of their own travel and lodging costs. We bring a majority of the medical supplies as the local hospitals aren’t equipped. We rely on donations to locally purchase medications we are not allowed to travel with. I will be writing a daily blog to document the progress we are making! 

I’ve been blessed with a 31 year anesthesia career and I love being able to give back to these incredibly brave women!

I participate in honor of all breast cancer patients, especially my mom, Joan Manobianco and my good friend, Carin Cantilina Anderson.
