Help us award and showcase filmmakers of Pakistani heritage from around the world.

The growing Pakistani diaspora in the U.S. faces a dilemma—underrepresentation in film, TV, and mainstream media, the most influential medium of persuasion. This lack of representation leads to unfair misrepresentation and stereotyping of characters.

Despite Netflix being the most diverse SVOD platform in the U.S., only 2% represent actors and filmmakers of Pakistani heritage out of the total of 10.9% of AAPI films. Actors of Pakistani descent in Hollywood can be counted at our fingertips, and their stories are nonexistent in the mainstream media in the U.S.

Just like other AAPI creatives, Pakistani filmmakers and actors face similar challenges of:

Racism

Discrimination

Microaggression

They have been vilified and stereotyped as an IT person, a doctor, or a taxi driver with an accent.

The lack of access to resources and the toxic film industry culture are other barriers for Pakistani filmmakers.

It's essential to correct and define the narrative of the Pakistani community.

Rūng Film Fest aims to achieve this goal by highlighting and showcasing original stories told through the lens of Pakistani filmmakers. The first Rūng Film Festival in Houston took place on May 4th and 5th, 2024, with an impressive line-up of award-winning independent films by Pakistani filmmakers, panel discussions, and networking opportunities.
