Humble Pig Gets Its Wings
Introducing the Humble Pig Animal Sanctuary!
Located on 90 acres in Darlington, South Carolina, Humble Pig is a 501(c)3 non-profit animal rescue, currently home to Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, Chickens, Turkeys, Goats, Turtles, and, of course, Pigs! We rescue, rehabilitate and re-home animals in dire need. Sanctuaries act as emergency first responders for animals in crisis and provide healing, long-term care. We also create opportunities for people to experience the profound sensitivity, intelligence, humor and kindness of animals.
Emergency rescues always arise unexpectedly, and every story is unique. 6 months ago, a hungry mama dog ran up to my car, then led me on an all-night treasure hunt for her babies, ending 15 hours later at dawn in a cornfield. The 5 puppies grew up safe, strong and surrounded with love. Mama Esmé was adopted to a wonderful family, and the last of her pups are heading to their new homes this week. Adopters are chosen very carefully, according to each animal’s specific needs and personality. If the adoption is unsuccessful for any reason, they will always have a familiar home to return to at Humble Pig.
Many animals are in need of permanent sanctuary. Senior dogs, too often discarded by their humans, are particularly difficult to re-home. One of our resident dogs, an elderly basset hound named Bart, was around 12 when he wandered on to a neighbor’s farm, in terrible shape from a lifetime of neglect. Bart had never been inside a house, and had trouble with house training, as well as intense food allergies and other chronic health problems. After his first 2 adopters returned him within a few weeks, it was decided that Bart should stay on as a permanent member of the Humble Pig family. Now, his health problems are resolved, and he somehow seems to be getting younger and younger every day.
Last week, I got a call about a red-eared slider turtle who had been living in a tiny Tupperware on a kitchen counter, eating only hot dogs, for the past 15 years. Her growth is very stunted, her shell is soft, and her skin is white as a ghost from lack of sunlight. Now she is free to swim, dig in the sand, or bask on a log with her turtle friends in the warm greenhouse of Humble Pig.
Just a few days ago, while pulling in to the feed store, I spotted a little black dog dodging semi-trucks on the highway. She was terrified and hungry, and with a bit of patience and negotiation I managed to coerce her into a kennel. Now she is home, curled up in a warm blanket with good food in her belly.
