Unofficial Mapbox DC Holiday Giving
Hey Mapbox DC! This is completely unofficial, FYI, just coming from me as a person.
I think we're a bunch of generous and compassionate people and the holidays seem as good a time as ever to exercise those characteristics. I'm hoping we can together raise a nice chunk of change for House of Ruth, an important and well run DC charitable organization.
HoR runs 14 programs and five shelters for women and children who are fleeing abusive partners and situations. HoR provides housing, daycare, support groups, mental health and addiction recovery services, parenting classes, life skills training, and financial classes to the women they serve.
In addition, HoR runs a child development center called Kidspace, a nationally accredited child development center for kids 6 weeks through five years of age when they enter kindergarten. Kidspace serves homeless children, and the children of women staying in HoR residential programs, providing them with high quality and individualized instruction, a safe environment, and food.
Also, HoR runs a Domestic Violence Support Center, providing support, counseling, and social services coordination for 400+ women every year who are affected by abuse.
HoR, like many shelters in DC, have been adversely affected by our city's gentrification and rising real estate cost. The WaPo took a closer look at this problem earlier this year:
