Imagine a place where veterans battling the invisible wounds of PTSD can find solace, connection, and a path toward healing. U.S. veteran Jason Shields has a dream and a vision for just that.
He, along with his wife Birgit, founded Hoof Haven Sanctuary, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Gatesville, Texas, that rescues endangered or injured horses, rehabilitates them and provides them with a forever home. Now, he’s looking to expand this dream to help veterans connect with nature and these rescued horses through the sanctuary. Jason’s own life story is a testament to resilience and the power of second chances.
Jason and Birgit moved from Fort Sill to a 20-acre property in Gatesville. Their introduction to helping hoofed animals in need actually started with a donkey! Jason got word of a donkey, Jack, who needed somewhere to go, and with that Hoof Haven Sanctuary was born.
Jason, a six-tour military veteran, has faced unimaginable hardship: his wife's cancer battle, a near-fatal 14,000-volt electrical accident, and the heartbreaking loss of his son. Yet, from these trials, a profound mission has emerged. He's dedicated his life to rescuing neglected and slaughter-bound horses, offering them a forever home at Hoof Haven Sanctuary.
Currently home to 24 rescued horses, Jason witnesses firsthand the calming and therapeutic presence these gentle giants offer. Now, his vision is to expand this haven to serve his fellow veterans. Situated near a military base, Jason dreams of creating a retreat where vets can come together, share their stories, connect through music, and experience the unique, non-judgmental companionship of horses. He believes that the quiet strength and intuitive nature of these animals can be a powerful catalyst for healing and recovery.
But Jason needs our help to make this dream a reality.
Your donation, no matter the size, will directly contribute to:
- Providing essential care and resources for the rescued horses who are themselves part of this healing process
- Clearing the land and removing hazardous debris left by flooding
- Developing safe and accessible spaces for veterans to interact with the horses
- Building a welcoming and supportive retreat environment where veterans can find peace and community
Jason's journey is one of incredible strength and compassion. He's turned personal tragedy into a mission to help both vulnerable animals and his fellow heroes.
Help Jason build a sanctuary of hope and healing to make a real difference in the lives of veterans struggling with PTSD. Please donate today and become a part of the Hoof Haven story.
