Makeshift Traveler bag for the Homeless Community
Introduction
Hi friends! My name is Zac Clark, founder and Executive Director of The HomeMore Project! 2022 has been a fantastic year, and we are on pace to impact over 250 lives with our Makeshift Traveler to conclude the year. Since launching on October 1st, we have distributed nearly 100 Travelers to those unhoused in San Francisco. We need YOUR help to continue distributing and impacting the lives of those who need it the most!
Makeshift Traveler Unit and Components
Our Makeshift Traveler is a backpack specifically tailored to the needs of an individual experiencing homelessness. The outer shell technology has a solar panel that stores energy within the bag's battery bank. According to UCSF, over 70% of San Francisco's unhoused community use cell phones to connect with services and loved ones while also providing entertainment. The outer surface of the bag consists of a urethane-coated nylon pillow designed to function as comfort, along with a security measure while sleeping.
The Makeshift Traveler also has various added utilities to maximize the tools within the bag. When facilitating the donations of the Makeshift Traveler, we also include the following:
- FM/AM Radio and Headphones
- LED Rechargeable Flashlight with 3 Modes
- 24 Ounce Water Bottle
- Sleeping Bag with Nylon Outer and Fuzzy Warm Inside
- Rain Pocket Coat
- Identification Card
- Informational Brochure list 12 other partner organizations and their services
- Five Uplifting Stickers to put on the bag or water bottle :)
Importance of Makeshift Traveler
In addition to providing these basic necesssities encompassed, we use our Makeshift Traveler as a vehicle to connect with individuals; learning their stories, providing them someone to open up and chat with, while hearing from them what kind of programs they want to see to help them alleviate the challenges of homelessness. Conversations usually are around 30 minutes, but we have chatted to some of our new unhoused friends for up to an hour and a half. When you donate to our Makeshift Traveler, you are not only providing the tangible necessities, but also the opportunity for friendship.
Funding Necessity
Each Makeshift Traveler costs us roughly $100 to make, including the tangible materials and the shipping and distribution to someone unhoused. Therefore, for every $100 we receive, we can provide someone experiencing homelessness with these necessities.
Thank You!
We are so thankful for all of our wonderful donors, supporters, and funders of The HomeMore Project-- we could not have done any of this without you! We are excited about the hopeful progress through this fundraising campaign.
We look forward to positively changing lives together!
