Dear Friend of North Flint,
The Flint and Genesee Chamber of Commerce’s 2020 Lead Now Cohort is working along with Pastor Leo Robinson to help raise money to open a laundry facility they will call "The Good Laundry" in the basement of The Good Church (formal known as Holbrook Avenue Church of God) located at 1034 E. Holbrook Flint, Michigan 48505. Pastor Leo was able to secure a partnership with Whirlpool. A donation of four washers and four dryers from Whirlpool has helped Good Laundry to launch into a successful hub for the neighborhood.
The residents in the north Flint area often do not have access to a washer and dryer in their home. Laundry facilities are far away and costly. A condition where families must choose between paying for food and utilities or personal hygiene is called “hygiene poverty”. Studies show that having access to clean clothes builds a person’s sense of self-worth and dignity. When a family has access to laundry facilities, they boost their chances of securing steady employment and reducing their children’s absenteeism from school. Wearing clean clothes provides children and youth with confidence and defends against bullying, stigmatizing, ridicule, and rejection. Clean clothes can mean the difference between a family’s sense of confidence or feelings of defeat.
I am writing to you today to enlist your support in breaking down barriers for clean clothes in The Good Church neighborhood. Donations of any size will help to empower families to take the first step to raise their confidence.
Your donation will go directly toward a monthly access card for washing or drying clothes. The money may also be used to buy detergent, fabric softener, or dryer sheets. Larger donations will help to pay the water, gas, or electric bills to run the machines.
