Save Lexy: Help Our Therapy Horse Beat Cancer
Beloved Helping Hands therapy horse needs help beating cancer! Helping Hands Horse Rescue and Equine Therapy Inc. is a 501-c-3 non-profit organization that utilizes horses, many of them rescues, for healing. Lexy is one of those horses that we have saved and are using in our equine therapy program.

Please help us save our beautiful Lexy. When Lexy arrived at our Sanctuary many years ago, she was fighting for her life. During her trip up from California, she got an infection from a sick horse and got shipping fever (Pneumonia). The pneumonia had spread to the lining of her lungs. After a week in the hospital and various rounds of intravenous antibiotics, the vets were able to save her life. At that time they told us that she had various melanomas (skin cancers) growing around her anal and vaginal area. We were told to keep an eye on the growths to make sure they didn’t spread. For various years we treated the cancer successfully with a homeopathic treatment called RSO. Once a week we applied the treatment. The cancer did stop growing, and no new growths sprouted or spread. Sadly, last month we noticed some new tumors had grown around the old area. Our vet said if we are going to treat her, we must hurry because the cancer may travel internally. We are devastated, as Lexy is one of our most beloved healers and helps children as young as 5 work through trauma and abuse. She has the kindest demeanor, and is always so calm and quiet. We don’t want to lose her, because we love her so much and so many of our therapy kids depend on her. After doing research, we found a new vaccine that is made from a horse’s own cancer. A company called Torigen will make the vaccine specifically from one of Lexy’s existing melanomas. The local vet will do a biopsy and send in a sample of her own tumor. The estimated cost for a biopsy kit, vaccine development and 6 injections she will need will cost about $5000. The vaccine has been successful for other horses that are fighting melanoma, so we are very hopeful that this is what will cure Lexy. All donations are 100% tax deductible.

Meadow the guardian and therapy dog

Hi Everyone,

Our beloved guardian and therapy dog Meadow has been dealing with a recurring infection, and needs to have a surgery by a specialist to give her a chance to live. Since September, she has had to go to the vet multiple times. Recently while flushing and exploring the infection, the vet did find an embedded grass seed, and we believed this to be the cause of the recurring infections. Sadly, two months later she developed another infection in the same location. The vet gave us some background on why grass seeds, or fox tails, can be so detrimental to a dog’s health, and how this issue actually ends the lives of many dogs even though they seem fine. This can never heal on its own, and the vet made it clear that she cannot humanely live with this issue if we cannot resolve it.

The surgeon believes that the best chance for Meadow is to do exploratory surgery at the infection site and also to remove the entire anal gland and any affected tissue. The hope is that the piece of seed will come out along with everything else with the removal of the anal gland. This is a specialized surgery, and has risks. It is also not guaranteed to succeed, as there is no way to know exactly where the seed piece is. We believe that the odds are good though, and that this is the best chance Meadow will have. She is so young and has so many years left in her as a therapy dog and a guardian dog for our sanctuary animals.

Meadow’s story on our sanctuary started out because coyotes, raccoons, and cougars were actively killing and terrorizing our furry and feathered friends. Meadow and her partner Aspen came to the farm to patrol the farm perimeter, and the predator issues are gone now. They live with their goats and sheep, and they cut off access so that the predators cannot come deeper into the farm.

When Meadow and Aspen first came, we didn’t think these two dogs were going to be such lovers and so accepting of visitors to their pasture. Meadow showed us early on that she was way more than a guardian dog. She wanted to be around people and she loved kids the most! We never expected to integrate her into our therapy program, but then one time we did try bringing therapy clients to the dog pasture. It went so well for everybody, that it became a weekly occurrence. Meadow gives unconditional love and affection, and she forgives the unpredictability that kids can bring into the space, always staying close. Meadow is the ultimate buddy for the kids, following them, cuddling with them, dancing, giving handshakes and going on adventures through the forests and the fields.

Please look at the pictures and see what a wonderful soulful girl she is. Meadow is so vibrant and lively. She is an amazing partner to Aspen. They have always been together and their work together is incredibly harmonious. Any person who has met Meadow knows how loving, sweet and connected she is. She is an absolute ham and she will trip you for belly rubs if you don’t watch out! When I look in her deep brown eyes, she tells me that she has so many years left to live, and so many more cuddles to give. Thank you for reading. Save Satin the Therapy Horse
Please help us save our beloved therapy horse, Satin. Satin has helped hundreds of people over the years as a therapy horse through Helping Hands Healing Sanctuary. On a weekly basis, she and her horse partner Elegance team up with a therapist to heal kids and adults that are dealing with a variety of mental health issues such as trauma, suicide, depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Many of these therapy sessions are provided free of cost to help those who are in most need. Now she needs your help!

On Wednesday evening, Satin suddenly became sick with colic and had to be taken to OSU Veterinary Hospital. Emergency exploratory surgery revealed that she had multiple benign cysts growing in her abdomen, one of them blocking her small intestine. The wonderful surgical staff at OSU spent hours in the middle of the night removing the cysts, and Satin woke up from surgery and stood up on Thursday morning. The cause of these slow-growing cysts is unknown, but it can happen to many horses across the board, and would have been impossible to know they were there without exploratory surgery. Satin survived surgery and is now standing on four feet, but her recovery process will be long. She has many obstacles to overcome and her veterinary bills are being estimated between $15,000 to $20,000. Because Helping Hands is a non-profit, we count on grants and donations to help us meet the needs of the therapy horses. All donations are 100% tax-deductible. We are raising funds to be able to provide her with the very best veterinary care at OSU, giving her a strong chance to survive and recover.
