Heart of Biddeford

Built in 1853, this magnificent  clock tower was the center of communication for the city of Biddeford.  Early great citizens such as Israel Shevenell and Samuel Batchelder could read time on its one of four 7-foot dials or hear it strike the hour. Every morning, noon and end of the work day, a mill employee ascended the stairs and tugged on a huge rope to ring its 4,000-pound bell.

In 2007, this beautiful and irreplaceable piece of Biddeford was savagely severed from its belfry. This 26,000-pound piece of Biddeford history hung from a crane and was thrown on the ground next to the mill.  It fell prey to greed and to people who had no respect for Biddeford history. They saw dollars and not the invisible covenant we all have to generations to come.

The clock can be fully restored. We know where all the parts are.  An architect has assessed its viability for complete restoration, and the City of Biddeford has extended an invitation to relocate it to a prominent spot on the RIverwalk. It is a place where we can tell the story of Biddeford’s industrialization and the Lincoln Mill Clock Tower’s role in it, for many more years to come.
