Hazel's House Rescue

On January 13, 2026 nine newborn puppies were found abandoned in a box beside a dumpster.

They had no mother, no shelter, and little chance of survival. Hazel's House Rescue took them in immediately and named them after the Brady Bunch: Carol, Alice, Peter, Greg, Mike, Bobby, Jan, Cindy, and Marcia.

Since they were orphaned neonatal puppies, they required around-the-clock bottle feeding to survive. We exclusively fed the puppies Breeder's Edge Foster Care Puppy Milk Replacer that is supposed to provide complete nutrition with digestive and immune support. But, at approximately 4 weeks old, something started going terribly wrong.

First one puppy began limping. Then another. Then another. One puppy, Greg, could not walk and four of his siblings began struggling as well. What we initially feared were isolated injuries quickly became something much bigger.

Multiple veterinary visits, x-rays, specialist consultations, bloodwork, endocrinology review, genetic testing, and FDA involvement ultimately led to a diagnosis of nutritional rickets. The puppies' bones were so weak that fractures developed and, in some cases, bones began collapsing under their own weight.

In our search for answers, we:

-Consulted veterinary specialists

-Ruled out hereditary rickets through genetic testing

-Completed advanced bloodwork and endocrinology review

-Submitted an opened canister of formula for third-party testing at the FDA's request

After veterinary concerns arose, the puppies were transitioned off the formula and onto puppy food and the affected puppies began improving.

Greg, who previously could not walk, finally began trying to stand and walk. For five of the nine puppies, including Greg, the damage had already been done. Carol, Alice, Peter, Greg, and Mike now require major orthopedic surgery to repair fractures and permanent skeletal deformities. The remaining puppies—Bobby, Jan, Cindy, and Marcia—were also affected but thankfully avoided fractures.

For months, Hazel's House Rescue attempted to resolve this matter privately with Revival Animal Health, the manufacture of the Breeder's Edge Puppy Milk Replacer the puppies were exclusively fed. Unfortunately, no agreement has been reached with the company that would provide all of the necessary funding for the surgeries, rehabilitation, veterinary expenses, and ongoing care these puppies require due to the lasting effects of the imbalanced formula. Revival Animal Health tested formula from the same lot that was given to the nine puppies and the FDA tested formula samples from the open canisters that were fed to the puppies. The testing from the company resulted in a voluntary recall of the formula due to imbalances and the FDA testing revealed additional imbalances to what the company found.

We have reached a critical point. These puppies need surgery. And they need it soon.
