Hands Up for Haiti, Inc.

My name is Dr. Mary Ann LoFrumento, pediatrician and Executive Director of Hands Up for Haiti, a medical humanitarian organization that has been providing care in northern Haiti since 2011. We are in urgent need of funds to save a little girl's life.

Saskia is a bright and brave 5-year-old girl from Labadee, Haiti.. Several weeks ago, Saskia's father carried her into our Hands Up for Haiti Pediatric clinic several weeks ago. She could no longer walk or speak and she was suffering from debilitating headaches and seizures. Hands Up for Haiti’s staff moved mountains to get her a CT scan, which showed what we already suspected: a brain tumor that was causing a massive build-up of fluid in her brain called hydrocephalus.

In Haiti, a brain tumor is almost always a death sentence, but two teams of pediatric neurosurgeons reviewed Saskia’s scans and believe that the tumor can be removed and that she can be cured. But time is running out.

Hands Up for Haiti has activated a network of neurosurgeons who have arranged emergency treatment first in Haiti and then hopefully a transfer to a hospital in the United States to remove the mass. Hands Up for Haiti is covering the initial costs for Saskia's treatment, but we need your help.

During the past nine years, HUFH has sent over 100 medical teams to Cap Haitien and the surrounding region, initially focusing their efforts on Cap Haitien and Limonade, a rural area not far from Cap Haitien. Their global health teams frequently work in the coastal Bas Limbe region, increasing to the west the areas where volunteers perform outreach and support the community, its doctors, nurses and community health workers.

Today, HUFH focuses on health care programs delivered by their Haitian staff to their own communities; they support a Haitian staff of more than 40 medical and other professionals as well as community health workers and lay staff. Their programs include fighting malnutrition, cervical cancer screening and treatment, hypertension screening and treatment, prenatal care, the community water project, community health education, and a hospital and surgical fund. HUFH medical teams also deliver care in remote areas with little access to medical care. Medical Education and Specialty Training is conducted for both doctors and nurses. Their Eye team works with their Haitian counterparts to make high-quality eye care available, and they have made a commitment to train the next generation of doctors and nurses in their Global Health Education Program.

They came in response to a disaster; they stay because they believe in the future for the children of Haiti.
