Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce Community Fund

Thank you very much for strongly "Supporting Harlem Now!" Our family support effort has grown to over 900 generous and concerned contributors like you committed to helping to stabilize and maintain the "Harlem's of New York and beyond" during during the continuing historic challenging times brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, food insecurity, small business crisis, family crisis, systemic racism, and much more. We continue to utilize and build on your continued contributions to assist thousands of families, many small businesses, cultural and community-based organizations in need.

HEALTH INITIATIVES

In August 2021, the Chamber hosted a series of HARLEM WEEK Virtual Health Summits where some of the foremost medical experts locally, regionally, nationally and internationally discussed the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and it disproportionate impact on communities of color, along with the mental health and alternative medicine modalities. COMMUNITY FOOD INSECURITIES INITIATIVES

Food distribution in partnership with ReThink Food NYC, Salem United Methodist Church and West Harlem Group Assistance continues at our family pick-up location at Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Boulevard & West 129th St. to feed seniors, families, and homeless persons. Since we began this community food initiative, we have had to quadruple the 500 meals originally provided and are now serving over 2,000 meals daily. In addition, this year we provided 500 Thanksgiving turkeys to hungry families and will do so again for Christmas.

 

JOBS & CAREERS

In partnership with Roc Nation, a jobs and career fair for over 2,500 attendees was held at Madison Square Garden on November 18. At this event, 60 major private, public and cultural employers offered more than 10 thousand job opportunities to help reduce New York’s unemployment rate, which currently is the 3rd highest unemployment rate in the United States. The jobs fair specifically targeted single parents, veterans, members of poverty alleviation and workforce development programs and those returning from incarceration.

 

TECHNOLOGY

The Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Silicon Harlem and The City College of New York, produced a series of HARLEM WEEK 2021 events to support the technological needs of our Seniors, Students, NYCHA Housing Complexes, Homeless Shelters, and Hospitals where strong communication tools are most needed. The Student Youth Conference in August featured conversations about jobs and careers in the service sector, Broadway, Health and Technology sectors. A live event Hack-A-Thon for middle and high school students focused on the question “How can we improve our community using Artificial Intelligence?” Teams of students answered the question by presenting new apps, websites, and other digital solutions.
