Good Earth Commons

Let’s talk food. Healthy food requires healthy earth to grow in. The more alive and healthy the earth, the more nutritious the food. The way to make good earth is to use wonderful ingredients - substances that we presently waste. Not only are we not using this “waste” wisely, we are perpetuating an unhealthy environment because food “waste” from our kitchens, groceries, trees (wood chips), and coffee cafes that goes into landfills creates methane, which is extremely harmful. At Good Earth Compost we do two things:

We have had our soil tested twice and the test results show that our earth is above the standard, which is 900. Our soil tests at 4,235, more than the products people are paying a lot of money for. (We tested one for comparison, and we know they were slightly below 900 in microbial life.)

We envision a well-informed neighborhood that appreciates the value of the earth they use for the healthy food and beautiful flowers that it produces; a neighborhood that participates in the production of this fundamental resource. This includes the education and participation of children so that creating earth in this manner is seen by them as the normal, natural way of doing things.

The land we are situated on is located at Dog Head Farm (managed by Concrete Jungle ), a non-profit garden producing food that is donated to food pantries in the Atlanta area. They have partnered with us in exchange for compost. We have built the structure. We have had events for neighborhood participation, such as a pumpkin smashing party. We have ordered the equipment that we need to make a substantial amount of compost without the tremendous physical labor that is usually entailed. (See below).

We plan to produce up to seven yards per week.

What we most need now is a truck so that we can both gather our ingredients and distribute the compost. Eventually, we will sell it at a very competitive price for a product superior in value. We also want to support our operation with people who will become members in this endeavor whether or not they live in our neighborhood.
