Global Family Philanthropy (GFP), a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, is sending a team of volunteers to Puerto Rico Monday to deliver donations, supplies and resources to help its residents recover after a devastating 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit the island Tuesday, after a 5.8 one struck just the day before. 

More strong aftershocks are likely as well as the threat of a tsunami on the island as residents brace themselves for a natural disaster far worse than Hurricane Maria in 2017, which left Puerto Ricans without power for months. This time however, the island had no warning and has never felt an earthquake of this magnitude before. Puerto Ricans were caught off guard, leaving them nerve-racked for more poweful aftershocks at a time when the country is barely back on the grid after the hurricane disaster. 

The immediate aftermath from the earthquakes has sent the island into a near blackout with no relief in sight. Preliminary reports show at least one person killed, seven schools damaged, and more than 300,000 people without power. Those numbers will increase as more reports of significant damage comes in. Puerto Rico faces widespread devastation, and its residents are experiencing eerily similar circumstances to Maria. The island is shut down. Schools and hospitals are closed. The streets are dark. Food and water is scarce. Access to essentials is almost non-existent. 

More aftershocks are likely in the coming days and weeks and will happen without warning to a country that is unprepared and unequipped to handle another natural disaster situation. The island needs our immediate help. Please donate to GFP and help us help the people of Puerto Rico. Art for the Abandoned Elderly

Artist, Jenna Raskin Moreines and her students/volunteers has partnered with Global Family Philanthropy (GFP) to create and install beautiful mosaic works of art in GFP's home for the abandoned elderly in Derac, Haiti. This lovely circle of friends is donating their time and talent to this very meaningful project.

Art is healing. Not only will the elders and the  community enjoy the beauty, many will learn how to make their own works of art in the process.

Your donation will go directly to Global Family Philanthropy and be used for materials, supplies, shipping and the installation of the projects.

Global Family Philanthropy needs your help now more than ever.  The village of Malfety, Haiti was hit back to back by Hurricane Maria and Hurricane Irma, causing catastrophic damage to this small community.

The people of Malfety have lost everything with no economic means  whatsoever to recover. They are “in shock”, and are “frightened” by the incredible damage the storms inflicted. Over 75 homes are completely underwater. The local church, school, crops and livestock are also flooded.

But that isn’t the worst of it. Now their entire population is struggling to stay healthy as they are exposed to cholera, skin infections, parasites, malaria and malnutrition. Famine is in full swing and worsening by the day. Out of necessity, the Global Family Philanthropy medical clinic is serving as a temporary shelter for over 60 displaced families. They have nowhere else to go. Their school is shut down due to the high risk of disease and viruses. It’s a dire situation on so many levels.
 
Six of the Global Family Philanthropy board members are traveling to Haiti on October 1, 2017 to hand deliver donations and clean up. We are going to see what needs to be done and how we can help get these families back on their feet before disease puts them in grave danger. Our Haitian friends are in desperate need of suitable housing, dry, clean mattresses, clothing, shoes, medicine, food and clean drinking water.

Please help us by donating to Global Family Philanthropy so we can make this critical trip to Haiti a productive one. Every dollar donated goes directly into the hands of those that need it most. It is our purpose and passion to get to these families as soon as possible to help return them to health and safety.

For my Bar Mitzvah Project I will be raising money to build a home in Haiti for the elderly. I am working with Global Family Philanthropy, a wonderful organization, that is near and dear to my heart.

As many of you know, I have been to Haiti three times already. I am in love with the culture, the children and the wonderful feeling I have helping others.

I am going to tie in 2 important aspects of my life~volunteering and my family, into this project.

My Great Oma (great-grandmother) passed away at the age of 93 in February of 2012. She was such a strong, beautiful woman. She was always so proud of me. I want to continue that legacy by keeping her spirit going for others less fortunate.

The actual building will cost $10,000-
My goal for this GoFundMe is half the amount. I am also working on a few other fundraisers.

I know this is a lot to ask for, but with the help from people like you, I can spread my Oma's love all over the world.

Project Dignity: Resolving the Loneliness of the Elderly

In the ten years we've been traveling to Haiti, we've seen the worst in human suffering. We've held children that were hungry, sick and dying. We've visited poorly equipped and inadequately staffed hospitals. We've seen thousands of people crammed into filthy, makeshift tent villages.


We believed we could no longer be surprised. Then we visited the abandoned elderly in Derac. Derac, a small rural village in northern Haiti, is located 7 kilometers from the nearest town, market or hospital. At one time, village residents were employed by a local factory and received housing. The factory has since closed, but the workers and their meager housing remain.

The housing in Derac ranges from tent and mud hut-type structures to small square block structures, raised up a foot above the ground on concrete blocks. Crudely stacked rocks serves as steps up to the front door.

A young boy took us to one of the block "houses." Behind the metal door was an elderly woman lying on a cot, in complete darkness. The light from the door startled her, as she tried to adjust her eyes. She is covered in filth and unable to leave the room without assistance. She is lying in her own waste.

She reaches out her hand and asks for food. We dig through our bags to find water bottles and a protein bar. She is thankful and we are forever changed.
Each box structure revealed the same thing - malnourished elderly people living in filth with no physical or emotional stimulation.

Please help Global Family Philanthropy restore dignity to the residents of Derac.
With $10,000 we can build an elderly home for these men and women. They will have a bed, shared rooms and toilets. Our friends at Bon Samaritan, an elderly home in Ouanaminthe, have agreed to oversee the creation of this center.
