From what his friends have told me, when my dad was my age he was an adventurous and exciting young man. From hiking, biking, skiing and rafting, to starting his own businesses, hiking through Europe and going to concerts, he seemed to be a “yes man”, always ready for the happiness new experiences and new people brought him. He also wasn’t afraid of the “what if’s”, he was willing to take the risk and hope the reward was worth it. I am not surprised by this young version of my dad, because, as his daughter, I saw the same zealousness in him in the second half of his life. I have always looked up to him for his willingness to try anything and eagerness to continue to travel the world.
A few months ago, Dusty challenged me to do something outside my comfort zone. I, unlike my dad, am usually someone who likes predictability and safety. Knowing this, I have always tried to emulate my dad’s easy going-ness and adventurousness. Dusty’s challenge propelled me in this direction. A few months ago, I had never clipped into a road bike before, and now I am training for the Triple Bypass in August. Every training ride, I think about how excited my dad would be for me, and the biggest hug he would give me at the finish line of this race.
I am dedicating this race to him, to trying something new and intimidating with fervor and fearlessness, just like him. He passed about 4 years ago from a terminal brain cancer called Glioblastoma. 4 years later, Glioblastoma is still incurable and incredibly unknown. The best thing we can do for the people and families who are experiencing this disease is to continue to research how the cancer functions and innovative ways to treat it. For the Triple Bypass Race, I will be fundraising for the Glioblastoma Research Foundation, a research organization pioneering new treatments for Glioblastoma. Please join me in supporting this cause for my dad, and when you donate, I also challenge you to channel that same adventurousness he had.
I will be matching donations up to $1,000, with the goal of fundraising $2,000 total. I greatly appreciate any contribution you are able to make!
