Goal - $4K
Please join me in helping the wonderful local organization Girls Rock Detroit meet a serious fundraising need so they can operate their music camps for girls this summer. The first session is next week!
The situation is timely and super critical as funds that Girls Rock Detroit expected this year fell through!
Girls Rock Detroit is a partner organization with dance music-based social justice organization Give a Beat that I have become involved with through their Giant Jenga fundraising activity at Movement Festival.
Here’s more info about Girls Rock and the camp:
Girls Rock Detroit offers a week-long summer camp for girls, trans, and gender non-conforming ages 8 to 15. Through the course of the week, campers learn to DJ, play instruments, form bands, and write their own original songs... no experience required! In addition to songwriting, the girls attend workshops about a variety of subjects and get to meet local female artist or band each day. After just 5 days, DJs and bands perform a public show on the stage of a Detroit music venue.
DJ & instrument instructors, band coaches and counselors are all women, trans, and gender non-conforming volunteers, many of whom are involved in the Detroit-area music scene. We provide a positive space for our campers by creating an environment filled with supportive and inspiring role models. Camp tuition is on a sliding scale ($0-300) and we provide equipment and daily snacks and meals for participants.
Applications for prospective campers & volunteers are open now at www.girlsrockdetroit.org
Session 1: July 9-July 13 (Showcase at Third Man Records on July 14 @ 2 pm)
Session 2: July 30-August 3 (Showcase at Ant Hall on August 4 @ 2 pm)
They are also seeking in-kind donations in the form of healthy snacks & food (for volunteers and campers), art supplies, coffee, and musical donations of all kinds. Please reach out to [email redacted] if you are interested in donating!
Mission:
Girls Rock Detroit is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering creative expression, positive self-esteem and community awareness for girls, women, gender non-conforming, and transgender youth through music education and performance. By encouraging creativity, confidence, and collaboration in a supportive environment, we strive to empower young people to challenge preconceived notions of what they can do, what they can become, and become engaged members of our communities. We believe it is crucial that all young people have access to equipment and instruction regardless of their socio-economic background, religion, race, gender identity, sexuality or ethnicity.
