Like many families in Altadena, the Franklin family, my family, has experienced unimaginable loss. The Franklins lost two homes—one that had been their home of over 50 years and another that was their granddaughter’s first home. Both were forced to leave with little more than the clothes on their backs, losing everything in the process.

Altadena is more than just a town for us, its home. —it’s a community with deep historical and cultural significance. This town, which boasts a 31% African-American population and 70% home ownership, was one of the few places African Americans could purchase homes during the 1960s due to redlining practices. Families like the Franklins represent the strength, resilience, and rich legacy of this community.

While we are rallying around the Franklins, we know they are not alone. Many families in Altadena are facing similar hardships—navigating the challenges of starting over, securing basic needs, and finding stability.
