Help feed & employ our Central Oregon neighbors
PLEASE HELP US FEED & EMPLOY OUR CENTRAL OREGON NEIGHBORS
We are writing to ask for your help to feed some of our less fortunate families, all with school-aged children, and in so doing to help support our restaurants and the many people they employ during this difficult time. You would be providing healthy, high-quality meals to local families some of which are now living with conditions of poverty, in partnership with an organization we already support, Friends of the Children Central Oregon (FOTC).
We got the idea when watching a 60 minutes segment about Chef Jose Andres’ organization, World Central Kitchen which uses a two-pronged approach of employing local restaurants to provide fresh nutritious meals to people affected by emergency situations. We wanted to help the food service workers and also provide healthy meals to our own local needy families during this pandemic.
A BIT OF BACKGROUND:
Friends of the Children Central Oregon, is a local non-profit, evidence-based organization that partners with the school district to assist in selecting children who will benefit from having a consistent and caring adult in their life. These children are truly the least likely to succeed in school, and in life, but FOTC promises to provide an extensively trained Mentor to these kids starting in kindergarten and continues to mentor them for 12.5 years through high school no matter what. FOTC ensures the children aren’t overlooked and don’t fall through the cracks. These trained mentors are salaried professionals who spend their working hours with the children; 8 kids each, 4 hours with each child per week, the rest is prep time. As a result, children involved in FOTC are better prepared to succeed in life.
*83% of youth earn a high school diploma or a GED.
*92% of youth go on to enroll in post-secondary education, serve our country, or enter the workforce.
*93% of youth remain free from juvenile justice system involvement.
*98% of youth wait to parent until after their teen years.
We began meal delivery to FOTC families in May and decided to ask the Mentors to be the ones to deliver meals to the children and families, and as you might expect, they were beyond happy to have the opportunity to engage in person with their students and their families while dropping off food. A definite Win Win for everyone.
WHERE WE STAND NOW AND HOW YOU CAN HELP:
These meal deliveries are currently funded through September. However, with the recent decision to start the school year off with remote learning, we need to extend the program. Our goal is to raise $14,000 which would provide 1 meal per week, per family, for 20 families through the end of this year. Local food service members are employed to prepare meals, the Mentors get to have socially distanced visits with their FOTC kids during meal drop off, and FOTC kids and families get a weekly nutritious meal. Win-Win again. Any contribution amount will help, but for context a $100 donation provides one complete, nutrient dense meal for THREE of our families.
We’ve received a lot of positive feedback and gratitude from FOTC, the Mentors, the families. Also, the local food service companies and their employees have been grateful for this vital and consistent business. We started this program working with Broken top Bottle Shop & Ale Cafe and are currently teamed up with a local catering business, Cascade Catering, to prepare the delicious meals. We’d love to have you join us in supporting these struggling neighbors during these challenging times.
The funds raised from this GoFundMe will pay for the food and preparation that is helping feed the students and their families through the end of 2020. Any extra funds will extend the program.
