Help Support Shelter Animals – Paws & Art for Change!

Hi! My name is Julianne Bermudez, and I’m a senior at Millikan High School in Long Beach, CA, enrolled in the Quest Pathway. As part of my Quest Senior Project (QSP), I am working on a year-long, independent project that focuses on research, community engagement, and real-world impact. My project, Paws & Art for Change, aims to raise awareness about the emotional and mental health of shelter animals and provide direct support to local shelters.

Why This Matters

Many shelter animals experience extreme stress, anxiety, and isolation due to harsh living conditions and lack of stimulation. Without proper enrichment, their behavior can deteriorate, reducing their chances of adoption. My project seeks to address this issue by promoting stress-relief techniques, community awareness, and direct financial support for shelter programs.

What I’ve Accomplished So Far

Earlier this year, I successfully hosted my first event, an Awareness Campaign where pet owners learned about the effects of shelter environments on animals and engaged their dogs in a fun, art-based stress-relief activity (animal art therapy). The event reached over 45 attendees, and I distributed informational packets and enrichment kits to pet owners, encouraging them to incorporate stress-relief techniques at home.

My Second Event – The Fundraiser!

Now, I am working on my second event – an online fundraiser to raise $500 for Friends of Long Beach Animals. The funds will directly support:

• Medical care & adoption assistance for shelter animals

• Humane education

• Spay and neuter services for low-income pet owners
