About FRIENDS OF FIRST CHURCH BERKELEY
The Mission of the Friends of First Church Berkeley is to assist the Christian Science Society, Berkeley in the restoration and preservation of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Berkeley that was designed by the renowned architect Bernard Maybeck in 1910. The Church building has been designated a National Historic Landmark. Our work has involved replacement of leaking roofs, repair of termite and dry rot damage, and seismic strengthening - a critical need as the Church is four blocks from a major earthquake fault. The Friends' education activities about the architecture involves sharing its beauty with the public through tours, occasional concerts and public events. The Church is widely known in the San Francisco Bay Area, and has national and international recognition in architectural circles as a seminal building in the of the early 20th Century. The eclectic design includes elements of Arts & Crafts, Gothic, Romanesque and Japanesque styles. We regularly have visitors from Great Britain, Europe, Japan and throughout the USA.
