Gift upcycled school bags to 250 students in remote Nepal
Education is one of the strongest foundations a child can stand on. It shapes confidence, opens opportunities for a better life, and offers life-long learning that extends far beyond the classroom. Yet for many children in rural Nepal, even the most basic learning essentials remain out of reach. Something as simple as a school bag can determine how comfortably a child carries their books, how long those materials last, and how prepared they feel to learn each day.
At Chakraviu Nepal, we work at the intersection of education, sustainability, and community action. This is what inspired From Jeans to Dreams: Upcycling for Education, an initiative that transforms post consumer use denim into durable school bags and stationery pouches for students in rural Nepal.
These are not mass-produced items. Each upcycled school kit is thoughtfully designed to withstand daily use and long walks to school. Children carry stories of sustainability with them, not just school bags. So far, this initiative has equipped more than 580 students in rural Nepal with upcycled school kits that support their learning journeys.
The impact of this project extends beyond education. Denim, one of the most widely used fabrics in the world, is extremely resource-intensive to produce and slow to decompose. When old jeans are discarded and left in landfills, they can take decades to break down. During this process, synthetic fibers release microplastics into the soil and water, while chemical dyes and finishing treatments leach into the environment. Piles of textile waste also contribute to methane emissions and place increasing pressure on already overburdened landfills.
By upcycling denim, we reduce textile waste and help conserve natural resources. To date, the project has collected over 3,000 pairs of jeans, diverted approximately 1.5 tons of textile waste from landfills in Nepal, and helped repurpose an estimated 22.5 million liters of water. Each upcycled school kit is proof of 4 pairs of denim pants diverted from landfill.
Community is at the heart of everything we do. Every bag is handmade locally in Nepal, creating income opportunities for families in financial difficulties and demonstrating that sustainable solutions can be built within our own communities. Alongside production, we conduct awareness sessions and workshops that highlight the environmental cost of textile waste and invite people to be part of a circular, community-driven solution.
For students, these upcycled school kits send a powerful message: you are supported, your future is worth investing in, and you are part of a collective effort that values both people and the planet.
Our current goal is to reach 250 more students in rural and vulnerable communities of Nepal.
With $20, you can support one student with:
