Friends of Bronx Preparatory Charter School (Friends of Bronx Prep)

Bronx Prep's mission is to prepare underserved middle and high school students for higher education, civic involvement and lifelong success through a structured, caring environment of high academic expectations. Bronx Prep's rigorous academic program operates on an extended-day and extended-year schedule, requiring students to spend 50% more time in school than students attending traditional public schools. Our overarching goal, from the day a student enters Bronx Prep, is to prepare him or her for admission to and success in college. Bronx Prep is located in School District 9 in the South Bronx, an area of persistent and devastating failure in the public schools. The school uses a lottery process to accept girls and boys entering fifth grade. Fifty percent of our students are African American; 49% are Latino; and 1% is Asian. Fifty-two percent of our students are girls and 48% are boys. Ninety-three percent of our students come from the Bronx and the other 7% come from upper Manhattan. Eighty-one percent of our students are eligible for free/reduced lunch.
