Community Works CDC

Community Works is a ministry of local volunteers working to serve disadvantaged families in the blighted North Forest area of Northeast Houston.  Some of the factors that affect kids and their families in the North Forest community are:

·      43% dropout rate in North Forest and Kashmere High schools.

·      60% of residents earn less than $25,000 a year; 37% earn less than $15,000. 

·      40% of homes are Single Head-of-Household.

Johnny and Jenice Gentry lead Community Works and have dedicated their lives to serving thousands of poverty-stricken youth, single moms and ex-offenders in Northeast Houston. When Hurricane Harvey hit in 2017, Community Works brightened the lives of over 7,200 families by turning a church building into a safe haven that offered emergency shelter, basic needs and financial assistance for Northeast Houston survivors. 

Now, a year since Harvey, Community Works is launching a high-quality afterschool program serving at-risk youth in the North Forest area. 

The High 5 Afterschool Program will feature one-on-one mentoring, tutoring, academic enrichment, and family engagement.  High 5 will strive to increase students' academic, socio-economic and spiritual growth while meeting needs that go unaddressed during the regular school day.

Your financial support will help purchase educational and program materials, develop mentor training and enrichment programs, and hire qualified staff.
