A Birthday Wish Beyond Gifts

As our son Zaan turns one, we mark a milestone - not just in his life, but in the kind of life we hope to shape for him.

This day is not just a celebration of his birth. It’s the beginning of a journey we, as his parents, deeply believe in: a life rooted in empathy, kindness, and giving. A life where joy is shared, not stored. Where the measure of success is not just what you have, but how meaningfully you give.

We’ve been incredibly fortunate - surrounded by love, opportunity, and safety. But when we pause and look beyond ourselves, we’re reminded that much of the world is in pain. Children are not learning to walk but struggling to survive. Animals, across the world, live in chains, cages, and conflict zones - voiceless, unseen, and unloved.

So this year, Zaan is giving his first birthday away.

Every gift, every thought, every gesture of love that might have come to him—we ask you to redirect it. In his name. To those who need it most.

We’ve chosen two causes that speak to the heart:

1. Save the Children: supporting young lives affected by conflict, poverty, and crisis around the world with education, protection, and hope.

2. Four Paws International: a global charity rescuing animals from war zones, captivity, and cruelty, giving them sanctuary, dignity, and a second chance at life.

This is Zaan’s first act of giving. His first lesson in compassion. A quiet but powerful beginning.

My name is Felicia, and I am an eighth grader in WA. My goal is to support the TNVR program by raising awareness through posting posters around my school educating people about the TNVR approach and stray dogs, plus encouraging donations (which will be given to FOUR PAWS International). I think this approach is the most compassionate and effective way to helping stray dogs and reducing their number. If reproduction is controlled, the focus can shift to rescuing the remaining dogs and finding them loving homes.

Hi! My name is Laasya, and I am an eighth grader in Redmond, Washington. At school, we are currently having our 30-day projects, where each student does something to better understand society for 30 days. My project is about animal rescue and veterinary medicine.
