Greetings from Xela, Guatemala!
Protests, roadblocks, and inflation have created a perfect storm in Guatemala. We are raising money to benefit 32 Volcanes via Foundation Todos Juntos, because without your help, 32 Volcanes cannot achieve its 2023 goals.
32 Volcanes in Quetzaltenago (Xela), Guatemala runs community-driven projects including scholarships, healthcare, malnutrition treatment, and environmental projects in primarily rural, Indigenous areas in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. Their work is transforming Guatemalan communities despite the current political turmoil and deep-rooted obstacles.
So far in 2023, the staff and volunteers of 32 Volcanes have:
- Treated 240 babies and young children and their families in the Nutrition Program (averaging approximately 150 children each month)
- Provided over 1,500 medical consults in the Clinic
- Conducted regular appointments every 4-6 weeks for 107 patients with chronic illnesses such as high blood pressure and diabetes which require ongoing medication and monitoring that is not available via the public healthcare system
- Supported over 100 scholarship students, ranging from kindergarten to university level
- Provided educational support, hot meals and snacks, and extra-curricular activities to 32 children and their families at the Family Support Center in Llanos del Pinal
- Planted and harvested vegetables and medicinal plants from four agroecological community gardens
- Reforested with various native tree species in Valle Palajunoj and San Juan Ostuncalco
However, the crises in Guatemala have negatively impacted 32 Volcanes' ability to continue this important work.
- Extreme political turmoil and non-stop roadblocks paralyzed Guatemala in October resulting in severe gas, food, and service shortages and price gouging nationwide. The political situation is evolving. Read more here and here for the latest developments.
- Inflation has impacted the 32 Volcanes budget since the pandemic, and prices skyrocketed again in October.
- Staff travel and project programming were postponed.
- On-site income-generating activities were paused in October.
- 32 Volcanes is operating on a reduced budget; however, continued cost cutting will negatively impact the communities where they work. All donations received via this campaign will be directed to 32 Volcanes to cover the most urgent program costs.
