Hurricane Melissa Jamaica Relief – Food for the Poor
The Crisis
This Category 5 storm moved slowly across the island, bringing record-breaking winds, torrential rainfall, storm surges, and deadly landslides.
The scale of devastation is heartbreaking — entire communities have been flattened, and countless families are left without homes, power, or access to clean water.
Critical infrastructure has been severely compromised — including airports, hospitals, roads, and police stations — making relief and recovery efforts extremely difficult.
Westmoreland Parish, in particular, endured some of the most direct impacts — but the entire island of Jamaica has suffered widespread devastation.
Massive flooding and road collapses have cut off communities, while power and communication outages are expected to last for weeks.
The death toll continues to climb as rescue and relief efforts press on.
Who I Am
My name is Megan Probst, a Compass South Florida Principal who was born in Jamaica and has family, friends, and colleagues throughout the country — especially in Westmoreland, the region hardest hit by Hurricane Melissa.
Where I’m From
I was born in Jamaica but now live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
Our close proximity from South Florida to Jamaica allows us to quickly mobilize resources, supplies, and partnerships to get aid where it’s needed most.
Our Partners & Relief Network
Through our network and connections, we’ve partnered with Food for the Poor, a Jamaican-rooted humanitarian organization with headquarters in Coconut Creek, Florida, and Spanish Town, Jamaica.
Their team members are already on the ground delivering emergency supplies and coordinating with local leaders to assess the most urgent needs.
To respond to this urgent humanitarian crisis, we’ve set up this GoFundMe to collect donations for on-the-ground relief — providing food, clean water, and essential aid to those most in need.
My Relationship to Those Affected
Being born in Jamaica and having lifelong ties across the island, this cause is deeply personal.
My family, friends, and former neighbors are among those whose homes, farms, and livelihoods have been destroyed.
I am committed to ensuring that every dollar raised goes directly to Food for the Poor, which has proven transparency and a trusted record of emergency response in Jamaica.
How the Funds Will Be Spent
All funds will go directly to Food for the Poor, supporting a two-tiered relief and recovery plan:
Immediate Relief (First 90 Days)
Food assistance and clean water access
Hygiene and health supplies
Support for displaced families
Long-Term Recovery and Stabilization
Repair and reconstruction of damaged homes
Replacement of zinc roofs
Restoration of community infrastructure
Re-establishing agricultural livelihoods
Economic recovery for vulnerable families
GoFundMe updates will include photos, reports, and proof of how donations are used to rebuild lives and communities.
Why This Matters
Jamaica has touched so many hearts around the world — through its people, music, and “One Love” culture.
Whether you were born on the island, have roots there, or have simply been moved by Jamaica’s spirit, that connection unites us all.
With the strength and reach of the Compass community, we know we can make a meaningful difference.
Every act of compassion — every donation, share, and message of support — helps bring light and hope to those who need it most.
Please continue to keep Jamaica and her people in your thoughts and prayers, and let’s remain steadfast in helping however we can.
