Florida Skunk Rescue, Inc.

The Florida Skunk Rescue, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing pet skunks and finding them new homes.    We are run totally by volunteers.  We received a call asking if we could take a 6 year old skunk called Fatman because the roommate had moved out and left him behind.  It turns out that the roommate/boyfriend had moved out a year ago and the roommate/girlfriend had held on to him hoping the boyfriend would return.   She did this even though she didn't know how to take care of Fatman properly .  Fatman was fed nothing but dog food, which isn't good for skunks, and kept in a laundry room the whole  year  because she was scared of him.  When we picked him up, he was filthy, his nails overgrown, and we discovered he had an approximately 3 inch diameter tumor on the middle of his tail that was infected.  Upon consulting our vet it was determined that the best course of action would be to amputate his tail since the tumor is right in the middle of it.   Fatman has to have immediate surgery on Thursday, May 18th, before this turmor gets worse.  His surgery is estimated to be $600 not including  possible complications due to his age and weight.

We also have a recent rescue named Bam who is 5 yrs old.  Bam has been having trouble with his leg swelling and has been on and off meds for several months.  Now a definite lump has formed on his leg that was found to have mass cancer cells.  He's had minor surgery on May 13th to drain the abcess in it and is now on steroids to help shrink the tumor to make it easier to remove.  He will require further surgery in approximately 2 weeks.  His surgery is estimated to be $400 total (including what we've already spent on his surgery on May 13th).
