Nice News’ November 2024 Cause of the Month
More than a month after Hurricane Helene made landfall, the devastating effects of the natural disaster are still being felt in the American Southeast, with the Carolinas bearing much of the brunt of it. As such, food banks are continuing to work overtime to keep communities fed and hydrated, despite also having experienced significant storm damage.

That’s why we’re giving readers the opportunity to donate to Feeding the Carolinas, a network that unites the 10 Feeding America Food Banks serving North and South Carolina. As of mid-October, the network was back to serving all 146 counties in the two states and implementing new supply drops weekly in all Helene-impacted counties.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from this fundraiser will go directly to Feeding the Carolinas — and with Thanksgiving and the winter holidays around the corner, your support is needed more than ever. The organization will soon begin specialized food distributions to provide the normal staples in addition to the culturally specific foods that we all like to enjoy during the holiday season.

The $10,000 Challenge: Help Us Shave The Real Hiking Viking’s Beard!

Here’s the deal: If we reach $10,000 in donations through this fundraiser, The Real Hiking Viking aka Jabba aka Thomas Gathman, will shave his iconic beard live on "Backpacker Radio" on December 7th at The Skylark Lounge in Denver. This beard has been central to his brand and personality for over 10 years and a symbol of all the hiker boxes he's pillaged.

If we surpass this $10,000 goal, Jabba will say goodbye to his beard and hello to a world of not always having bbq sauce buried deep in a labyrinth on his face.

But wait, there's more!

To help get the donations rolling, our friends at Mountainsmith have generously offered to hook some lucky donors up with their backpacking gear. Everyone who donates a minimum of $50 will be entered into a sweepstakes to win the following prizes, courtesy of Mountainsmith:

One grand prize of 1 Zerk 40, 1 Andesite Trekking Poles, and 1 Zerk Fanny

You will receive one entry for every $50 donated (e.g., a $100 donation earns two entries).

The approximate total retail value of all prizes combined is $3,123.20.

The beneficiary: Feeding the Carolinas

Feeding the Carolinas is a network of ten Feeding America-affiliated Food Banks dedicated to fighting food insecurity across North and South Carolina. By working with local communities, they focus on providing resources, advocating for the root causes of hunger, and responding in times of crisis.

Following the destruction of Hurricane Helene, families across the region are now facing the daunting task of recovery, including the urgent need for food and water. In the immediate aftermath, Feeding the Carolinas is providing essential supplies like food boxes and water, and as people move back into their homes, they're helping restock their pantries and replace spoiled food from freezers and refrigerators.

Your donation will directly support these efforts, helping bring much-needed relief to families impacted by Hurricane Helene.

Feeding the Carolinas is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Your donation may be tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. The value of any goods or services received as part of this fundraiser may reduce the tax-deductibility of your donation. Dear Friends, Neighbors, and Supporters,

My name is Mack Garrison and I'm the Co-Founder and Director of Content at Dash Studio - a creative agency that helps brands connect to their communities based in Raleigh, NC. And right now, our North Carolina community is in dire need of help.

Hurricane Helene has wreaked havoc on Western North Carolina, leaving behind a path of destruction, flooding, and damage that has never been seen before in our state. Communities that were once vibrant and thriving are now struggling to rebuild, and many of our Appalachian neighbors have lost everything.

The effects of this storm have been especially hard on rural areas as roads and bridges have been washed away, homes destroyed, and families displaced - unsure of when they will be able to return to any sense of normalcy.

Our Mission:

Dash has created this GoFundMe campaign to support our our friends in the western part of our state because every little bit counts. All donations contributed will be donated to "Feeding the Carolinas" which is a network that unites the ten Feeding America Food Banks serving North and South Carolina. They act as a unified voice regarding hunger and food insecurity in our area and are currently working around the clock to get supplies to those most in need.
