Memorial Day Virtual Charity 5k
The impact that COVID-19 has had on our society is unprecedented, affecting different populations in different ways. For the focus of this fundraiser, I wanted to focus on low-income families that have been affected by job layoffs, decrease in pay, and healthcare costs associated with COVID-19. The economic impact caused by COVID-19 has resulted in housing insecurity and an increase in homelessness with both individuals and families.
The Memorial Day Virtual Charity 5k will be held on May 23rd, at 10:30am (or flexible based on your schedule since it is virtual) to raise money for Family Promise, a non-profit organization that's mission is to help low-income families secure housing and gain financial independence.
Family Promise (https://familypromise.org/) is a non-profit organization whose comprehensive model includes prevention, shelter, and stabilization programs to address the range of issues affecting low-income families experiencing homelessness to help them rebuild their lives and find independent and sustainable housing. A large goal is to assist these families in various ways to avoid the trauma of homelessness and gain true financial independence. Family Promise is a transparent organization and they make effective use of every dollar donated. Their annual statistics reflect this, as in the previous year, 93,000 family members were served, 82% of the families they serve in shelter go on to secure housing, and they return $3 in goods and services for every $1 raised.
I know many of you have wanted to help or contribute your help during this time, but just have not known how or in what way. This fundraiser is one way to directly help those negatively impacted by the economic crisis that has ensued due to COVID-19. Every dollar will go to securing housing for various vulnerable populations.
And lastly, this race is for all of you who just downright miss the race atmosphere, need motivation to keep up with your fitness or training, and want to get that temporary fix of racing until we can all race together again hopefully soon! You can use this race as a motivator to either set a new goal or to keep up with your fitness routine!
