Escucha Mi Voz Iowa

On April 10, international students at the University of Iowa were notified that one student had their visa suddenly revoked by the U.S. Department of State. In the days since, we’ve learned that five students in total are now facing the same devastating reality.

These students were given no warning, no explanation, and no clear path forward. They are now at risk of losing their homes, their education, and their community.

We are raising funds to support them as they navigate this crisis. Donations will go directly toward rent, basic living expenses, and attorney fees to help these students stay safe and stable during this uncertain time.

These are our classmates, our friends, our neighbors. Please give what you can and share this with others who believe in supporting international students during moments of injustice.

My name is Laura Castro. I’m writing as Jorge’s partner and the mother of our baby.

On September 25, my life was turned upside down when ICE agents detained Jorge Elieser González Ochoa in Iowa City.

For more than three months, Jorge was locked up inside a county jail while I was left to hold our family together. I took care of our baby. I made long drives, answered endless phone calls, and lived with the constant worry that he would be deported at any moment.

Thanks to massive community organizing and legal pressure, Jorge is finally home — but we are still in crisis.

He is not “free.” He is under intense ICE supervision and faces an ongoing deportation case. He cannot work freely. He has to check in constantly. One mistake or missed appointment could send him back to detention.

Right now, our biggest and most urgent need is housing.

Jorge is on home confinement in a small apartment shared by four other people. This is not our own space. Now that Jorge is free, our baby and I want to live with him, but there is simply not enough space. We need to secure a safe, stable apartment so our family can finally be together.

We are raising $20,000 to help us survive this emergency and fight for Jorge’s future.

• $15,000 will cover 12 months of basic living costs for our family:

– Rent

– Utilities

– Diapers

– Formula

• $5,000 will help us survive the next 6 months while we wait for work permits:

– Food

– Groceries

– Gas

After months without income, our only support has come from the community and from Escucha Mi Voz.

Jorge is a loving father. A hard worker. A good man. He belongs with his family and in this community.

No family should be torn apart for trying to survive.

El 25 de septiembre, mi vida dio un vuelco cuando agentes de ICE detuvieron a Jorge Elieser González Ochoa en Iowa City.

Durante más de tres meses, Jorge estuvo encerrado en una cárcel del condado mientras yo quedé sola tratando de sostener a nuestra familia. Cuidé a nuestro bebé. Hice viajes largos, respondí llamadas interminables y viví con la preocupación constante de que lo deportaran en cualquier momento.

Gracias a la enorme organización comunitaria y a la presión legal, Jorge por fin está en casa — pero seguimos en crisis.

Jorge no es “libre”. Está bajo una supervisión estricta de ICE y enfrenta un proceso de deportación en curso. No puede trabajar libremente. Tiene que reportarse constantemente. Un solo error o una cita perdida podría enviarlo de regreso a detención.

En este momento, nuestra necesidad más grande y urgente es vivienda.

Jorge está bajo confinamiento domiciliario en un apartamento muy pequeño donde viven cinco personas. No es nuestro es de un familiar, ahora que él está en libertad nuestro bebé y yo queremos vivir con él, pero simplemente no hay suficiente espacio. Necesitamos conseguir un apartamento má grande, seguro y estable, para que nuestra familia por fin pueda estar junta.

Estamos recaudando $20,000 dólares para poder superar esta emergencia y luchar por el futuro de Jorge.

Pascual Pedro Pedro is a 20-year-old construction worker and a beloved member of our parish and wider community in West Liberty, Iowa. He came to the U.S. from Guatemala as a 13-year-old child seeking safety and stability. Since then, he has become a true Iowan — confirmed in our church, a high school graduate, a leader on his soccer team, and a full-time essential worker helping to build homes and support his family.

On July 1, Pascual was detained by ICE during a routine check-in, despite having complied with every condition of his supervised release. He is now facing deportation to a country he barely remembers, where he has no safety net.

We are seeking to raise $20,000 to support Pascual and his family during this crisis - and we urgently need your help for:

Pascual Pedro Pedro es un joven trabajador de la construcción de 20 años y un querido miembro de nuestra parroquia y de la comunidad de West Liberty, Iowa. El 1 de julio, Pascual fue detenido por el ICE durante un registro de rutina, a pesar de haber cumplido con todas las condiciones de su libertad supervisada. Ahora enfrenta la deportación a un país que apenas recuerda, donde no cuenta con protección.
