Help Philip Seymour, a rescued malnourished and seriously injured horse, start his new life!
On October 7th, we received an urgent phone call about a horse desperately in need of rescue and immediate medical attention. He was in western New York at a location more than 300 miles from our horse sanctuary in Chatham, New York. The young Thoroughbred had a huge open wound on his right front leg. He was also malnourished and suffering from various degrees of neglect.
We knew very little about him except that this was an emergency and we needed to act quickly. He had once raced and, at some point, sustained a serious leg injury that was left untreated. He ultimately ended up with a horse dealer, which meant that he was at risk of being sold for slaughter, especially given his poor condition and injury.
We quickly made arrangements for a hauler to pick up this horse, whom we named "Philip Seymour." The hauler rushed Philip to Cornell Hospital for Animals in Ithaca, NY, where veterinarians immediately began working on him. He underwent extensive testing and diagnostics. The biggest challenge was dealing with the huge leg wound, which required skin graft surgery and was performed at the hospital. The operation, which entailed taking many small pieces of skin from his neck and transplanting them directly into the leg wound, was successful! Over time, these skin grafts will promote new skin growth to cover the existing bed of healthy granulation tissue.
The good news is that after more than three weeks in the hospital, Philip Seymour is coming home today! Once he arrives at his new forever home here at Equine Advocates Rescue & Sanctuary, Philip will have to remain on stall rest with daily hand-walking and hand-grazing for two months. After two weeks, he will be able to have access to a small corral behind his stall. His leg wound will require frequent bandage changes until it heals completely. Philip will undergo regular follow-up exams from our local equine veterinarian, as well as return visits at Cornell.
The worst is over for Philip Seymour, who is now on the road to a full recovery. Our goal for this sweet and gentle gelding is to live a long, healthy, and happy life in the company of other horses here at his new permanent home at the sanctuary. We plan to begin his introduction to a herd of four Thoroughbred geldings in the spring. Won't you please support his medical care and recovery?
Here is a breakdown of his expenses since his rescue on October 8, 2025, and some anticipated costs through his long recovery:
• Hospitalization, skin graft surgery, testing, diagnostics, treatments, and medications: $9,000
• Hauling to hospital on 10/08 and home to Equine Advocates on 10/29: $2,500
• Follow-up veterinary visits, equine transportation (hauling), medications, bandages, and other medical supplies. Estimated at: $3,500
*Any funds raised above our goal will also help several other horses living at the sanctuary who have undergone recent hospitalizations and treatments.
Thank you for your help!
