Since I founded Earthwide Surgical Foundation in 2004, it has been dedicated to delivering surgical care to the poor of the world by means of manpower, equipment and education.
I have been making mission trips to Nigeria since I was in medical school in 1985. In the United States or a similar developed country, it is difficult to believe what life would be without access to surgical care. For half of the world's population, this is their reality. Through Earthwide and all of its supporters, we stride to give more access to medical care to those who need it most.
While performing surgery is a primary part of Earthwide's cause, there is only so many surgeries that I can do. As the saying goes, “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” This why Earthwide has dedicated itself to not only doing humanitarian surgery but also teaching local doctors to do surgery. Through this, it allows for more access to surgical care in the poor of the world through education of the people.
In the past, I have performed many surgeries as well as taught many doctors, and I will continue to do so for years to come. However, there is no sense beating around the bush. I need money. The patients at my hospital are poor and few can pay. Many times they die from trivial problems that a little money can help. As I said, half the population of Earth, 3 - 4 billion people, have no access to care. Through Earthwide, we can come together and work to give knowledge to learners and hope to those in pain.
