In Sri Lanka, a country famous for its tea, I met a woman named Pushpa. She opened my eyes to the strenuous labor of tea plucking. Tea pluckers are traditionally local women; they are terribly overworked and underpaid. Pushpa was born into a family of tea pluckers but wanted a better life. Recognizing her potential to uplift other women, Pushpa created an apprenticeship program
Evolving beyond the terribly oppressive system of tea plantations, these women can earn more income, educate their children, and work toward a brighter future.
QUICK FACTS:
- In Sri Lanka, tea plucking is traditionally a woman's job.
- Tea pluckers work long hours in the fields, plucking tea by hand, yet earn only $4 USD per day.
- After having empowered herself, Pushpa partnered with Eliya Association to create an apprenticeship program to uplift other women and help them find better jobs.
- The apprenticeship program is a 6-month long training course in organic farming which diversifies these women's skillsets and opens many new opportunities for employment.
- It costs $1000 to sponsor one woman to attend the apprenticeship!
