As you may already know, our SunDown Spring Benefit and Awards 2020 event, scheduled for March 15th, was postponed due to the growing concerns of COVID-19.  We ask you, our community and supporters, to participate in our GoFundMe fundraiser to help us recover from the effects of the Coronavirus. We will continue to provide support, resources and information to the Down syndrome community during these times of uncertainty. We are in this together.

For over 40 years, The Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles  has been the resource center to all of Los Angeles.

Free resources and updated medical information is the result from the DSALA as it supports its community of over 4,000 families, doctors, hospitals, and teachers.

From a pre-natal diagnosis through all the milestones and into adult-hood.

What is Down Syndrome Anyway?
Down syndrome is the most common survivable genetic difference affecting one in every 700 births — about 6,000 each year. Trisomy 21, the most common type of Down syndrome is caused by an extra (third) copy of the 21st chromosome. The extra chromosome causes some physical and cognitive differences, but most people with Down syndrome are active and contributing members of society.

DSALA's Dedication and Success
What began as a small effort on behalf of a few children has changed the lives of thousands of children and adults with Down syndrome and their families. As recently as 1975, parents of children with Down syndrome were receiving such poor or negative information about their children’s future, that it was still common to place their children in an institution.

A group of 15 committed parents formed the Down Syndrome Association of Los Angeles  to find ways to raise their children at home. Their goal was to shift the focus from what was deemed negative about individuals with Down syndrome to focusing on what they could achieve.

Now 44 years later, our primary focus remains unchanged - to enhance the lives of both children and adults with Down syndrome and to support their families. From modest beginnings with 15 families, our staff and volunteers at DSALA serve close to 4000 families.
