Douglas W. Hick Scholarship Fund
Our friend, colleague and classmate, Doug, passed away March 7, 2021, succumbing to a 4-year battle with colon cancer. He led an exemplary life and left behind his loving family- his wife Melissa, son Colby, and daughter Katie, as well as his father, Don, his siblings Kristen and David and their families. He was predeceased by his mother, Joan who passed away a year prior. Many extended family members, friends, and colleagues’ lives are enriched by having known him.
Doug took the opportunity in his final weeks reconnecting with close friends to relive fond memories and to express what a lucky guy he was to have led the life he did. It was a bonding experience for all of us, and in typical Doug fashion, he left everyone feeling upbeat, and kept a positive focus on ‘his next adventure’.
In addition to being the fun-loving, reliable friend that we knew, he was a devoted family man and a natural entrepreneur and businessman. One year out of college, he purchased Mr. Tent, the business he would own and operate for the next 25 years.
Doug found the physically demanding aspects of running this business the most gratifying. In later years Doug relied heavily on his son, Colby who worked alongside his dad, erecting tents during his high school vacations and summers as well as his loving wife who was his right-hand person behind the scenes every day. His daughter Katie was also often seen checking on jobs and working alongside her dad.
Doug worked hard and played hard too. One of his greatest joys was his home in VT. He loved spending time with his family and friends zipping through the backwoods on snowmobiles. Throughout his life Doug remained the same focused, self-driven guy we knew back in high school. He was a great example to his fellow classmates by demonstrating the connection between hard work and attainment- the example we all remember was the Jeep he saved up for doing summer and after-school jobs. Fun Fact: ‘Doug and his Jeep’ were jointly awarded the Most Inseparable superlative of our high school.
Although Doug shied away from attention, he was aware of and appreciative of our plans to honor his memory with this scholarship. Money raised through this fund will be presented to one Duxbury High School senior each year who shares these character traits, and like Doug at that age, strives to be an entrepreneur. We hope that you will use this platform to share your memories. Thank you for supporting this effort to commemorate our friend, Doug Hick.
