In the past few months, DPS Rescue has taken in numerous dogs with a wide variety of medical issues (many of which were not apparent at first, and some of which have been really tough to diagnose)! We are doing our best to get them all healthy and ready for adoption, but we’ve found ourselves in a financial crisis. Care for these dogs has been staggering. In 2023, DPS has already spent over $75K on specialty medical cases- that's not counting normal spay/neuter and basic procedures such as hernia repairs, etc! We never want to give up on our dogs, but we need your help!
Below are some of the dogs we are currently treating and a snapshot of their struggles and the associated costs. Please consider donating, and spread the word to family and friends. We need all the help we can get, and every dollar makes a difference! If you’re unable to donate yourself at this time, we would appreciate it if you forward this email, or share or comment on our social media posts to increase our reach.
We also want to thank all of the wonderful foster families taking care of these dogs, driving them to vet appointments, administering medications, and giving them plenty of TLC. You are true lifesavers and we could not do it without you!
Sprite is a 6 month old Yorkie type mix who came to us with a partial fracture in her leg. Our vets let us know that if it had gone untreated for much longer, it would have caused a potentially fatal infection! Luckily our intake team caught the injury and she was taken straight to our vet. She's currently in a cast and will be recovering in her foster home. Her vet bills are estimated to be in the $2K range.
This adorable face belongs to Poppy. One of our team members was contacted by a woman who had been evicted from her home and was living in her car with her dogs. Poor Poppy had a broken leg but her owner could not afford any treatment. DPS couldn't say no to this sweet girl in medical distress! X-rays revealed that it's a clean break but will require surgery and plates to mend correctly. Costs are estimated to be $4,000-6,000.
Elijah is our latest medical mystery pup! Rescued from an overcrowded shelter at 8 weeks old, his foster reported that he stopped eating and was soon unable to even stand up. His fever was 105.6 and we rushed him to the emergency vet. Thankfully they were able to stabilize him and release him back to his foster. The initial 24 hour vet visit cost over $2,000; he's now had subsequent visits with our vet for x-rays and tests to determine why he's struggling to walk normally and why his joints seem to be causing him pain. Costs could range anywhere from another $2,000 up to $5,000, depending on what procedures he needs.
Miracle is a young dog who came to us pregnant. She recently gave birth to her puppies and experienced some pretty scary labor complications! Her foster mom rushed her and the newborns to the nearest emergency clinic and thankfully, they were able to save mom and pups. Miracle and her miracle babies are now safe and sound in their foster home. We will provide updates on this family as the babies grow!
Everest is an 8 month old Bernadoodle (DNA tested!) who was surrendered to our rescue when his owners could no longer care for him. We soon discovered that he has some neurological deficits (likely the result of poor breeding), muscle atrophy, and developmental delays. He suffers from seizures and we are working to find out the causes and a course of treatment that will enable him to live a long and healthy life! It’s impossible to estimate his total bills; he will likely need an MRI, possible medication, and other vet visits. A conservative estimate would be $10-12,000.
Maisy, 1 year old Pit Bull mix, came to us with a mass on her forearm, and an ear infection to boot! Our vet recommended removing the mass and monitoring it to make sure it does not come back, and prescribed medication for her ear infection as well. Maisy was a champ and her arm has healed and her stitches have been removed! But she wasn’t done… Our sweet Maisy has been plagued with a bad case of the itchies! Thankfully our vet was able to provide her with allergy shots and we have put her on a limited ingredient diet, and she’s feeling much better. Maisy's total medical bills are in the $1,000 range.
