About Diocese of Gallup

The Diocese of Gallup was erected in 1939 to serve the spiritual and corporal needs of the Native American Peoples, one of the first acts of Pope Pius XII. The Diocese serves seven distinct Native American Peoples: White Mountain Apache, Jicarilla Apache, the Hopi, Zuni, Laguna and Acoma Pueblos, and the Navajo Nation, (the "Dine"), the largest Indian Reservation in the United States. Diocese of Gallup is the poorest Catholic Mission Diocese of America. It is size of Illinois, crossing two states' boundaries/time zones/ laws and encompasses the two poorest counties of the states of New Mexico and Arizona. While it serves the distressed Indigenous peoples in its huge area, the Diocese's ministry includes a diverse mix of other cultures, including a rising Hispanic population.
