Support Independent Living for People with Disabilities
The District of Columbia Center for Independent Living (DCCIL) is a consumer-controlled, community-based organization led by and for people with disabilities that helps people live independently in their homes and communities. Our mission is simple but powerful: to empower people with disabilities to live independently, make their own choices, and fully participate in community life. Seventy-two percent (72% ) of DCCIL's staff are persons with significant disabilities.
Every day, our team works alongside individuals with disabilities to provide:
- Information and Referral – providing information to all interested parties about rights, services, programs, and other community resources available to people with disabilities of all ages.
- Independent living skills training – building confidence and practical tools for everyday life.
- Peer counseling and mentorship – connecting people with disabilities to others who have lived experience.
- Advocacy – ensuring that the voices of people with disabilities are heard at every level of decision-making.
- Transition support – helping youth with disabilities move into adulthood, and assisting individuals to transition from institutions back into community living.
These services are not about charity — they are about civil rights, inclusion, and equality of opportunity.
Real Stories, Real Impact
From Consumer to Community Leader
Last year, DCCIL launched the Ambassadors Program — a community outreach effort powered by former consumers who once received our services. Through peer support groups and independent living training, these individuals found their own paths to independence. Today, they are leaders: facilitating peer support groups, mentoring others, and connecting people with disabilities to critical resources.
Our Ambassadors are proof that with the right support, people with disabilities don’t just thrive — they give back, leading change in their own communities.
From Crisis to Stability
One of our consumers came to us during a time of great hardship: without stable housing, food, or consistent home care. Through DCCIL’s advocacy, independent living skills training, and peer support, our staff walked alongside this individual every step of the way.
Today, that same consumer has permanent housing, regular access to food, and a home health aide — the stability and dignity everyone deserves.
These stories are just two examples of how DCCIL transforms lives every day.
