D'Aste Church Preservation Project
The D'Aste Women's Service Group, Inc., is requesting donations to help us save the "little yellow church" located in the country at 39756 Dublin Gulch Road between Charlo, MT, and the Bison Range. It has been used as a community center for twenty years, but deterioration has made it unsafe. We are committed to reestablishing the community center and preserving the building to historic preservation standards for these reasons:
It represents a unique part of Montana’s immigrant history.
It’s the last remaining building of the old town of D’Aste, Montana.
It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
It's constructed in the old Craftsman style with some unique features.
Your donation will help us restore it.
The urgent need this year is to rescue the exterior:
Seal the structure from rodents, skunks, birds, and wasps.
Replace rotted exterior boards.
Prep, prime, and paint the exterior.
Grade the earth around the building to prevent rainwater from running under the structure.
Stabilize the foundation area to prevent further settling.
Set jacks under the building to begin flattening the slightly curved floor.
Completely replace the skirting.
We have hired Mark Kersting, a retired builder from St. Ignatius with four decades of experience in historic preservation work, to oversee and do most of the work.
We appreciate your help with this community project!
