For over 50 years, GrowNYC has believed that everyone can make a positive impact and that collective action is necessary to secure a clean & healthy environment for future generations.
GrowNYC helps 3 million New Yorkers annually by providing access to services, such as locally grown food, community and school gardens, recycling and waste reduction tools, that enable healthy and sustainable living.
GrowNYC operates in four main programming areas: Food and Farming, Green Spaces, Waste Reduction and Environmental Education.
Food and Farming
GrowNYC promotes Food and Farming through its 50+ GrowNYC Greenmarkets. These markets not only supply fresh, local produce to all New Yorkers but also support local farmers by providing them with a space to sell their products.
Green Spaces
GrowNYC has built more than 150 new gardens, including GreenThumb community gardens; gardens in public housing developments, churches, daycares, senior centers and a one acre urban farm on Governors Island, the GrowNYC Teaching Garden. GrowNYC builds about 10 new gardens per year and does renovation projects at an additional 25.
Waste Reduction
GrowNYC currently manages ~50 food scrap drop-off sites which provide composting services to all city residents thereby avoiding sending food waste to landfills, fighting climate change and turning waste into valuable fertilizer.
In addition, GrowNYC manages 8 clothing collection sites, which have collected ~6.25 million pounds of textiles since 2007. Textiles collected at these sites are taken to a facility where they are sorted into different grades, in an effort to recover as much usable clothing as possible for distribution to second-hand markets. Materials not suitable for reuse will go to recycling markets to be used as wiping rags or shredded for low grade fiber products such as insulation.
Environmental Eductation
GrowNYC Education helps youth and their educators foster a lifelong appreciation of nature, healthy food, and sustainability.
