Jessica was a straight A student who always knew what she wanted to do. She was tenacious, but very loving to everyone she came in contact with. Many of her friends can attest to this. She started out in the L. A. County Sheriff's Academy and was very well liked. She moved quickly, always wanting to be in a position of serving others and was extremely proud of her service. When things were difficult, she has always taken the lemons she was handed and made lemonade. Many of her friends, and I mean MANY, have made comments recently about her character, which was NEVER in question. She always put others first! I can't say horses were a hobby, but more of a passion! Her success as a barrel racer and overall knowledge of horse care speaks volumes. She married Kyle Swanson on March 3, 2009. She has 2 children, Brendan 18 and Luke 12. Brendan (U.S. Marine) and Luke both were involved in Jiu Jitsu for years and are very good at it. If I were to sum up Jessica's character in one word, it would be "Passion". She did everything with a passion and tenacity that was most admired. Her mother and I will miss her immensely and already realize the Grand Canyon-sized hole that will remain for the rest of our lives!

Tony Chavez, a retired deputy, LASD Class #259, has fallen on extremely hard times. His apartment was ravaged by a fire on May 5, 2021 and his family was only able to escape with the clothes on their backs.

He is temporarily living in a hotel, provided by the Red Cross. With his pension being the family’s sole source of income, they are desperately in need of financial assistance.

Supporting the Family of Sergeant Ron Helus


Ventura County Sergeant Ron Helus selflessly gave his life trying to rescue and save others in Thousand Oaks, after a gunman entered and began shooting college students. Just seconds before he responded Ron was on the phone with his wife when the reports of gunfire started streaming into the Ventura County Sheriff's Office. It was around 11:20 p.m. PT Wednesday, and a gunman had opened fire at the Borderline Bar & Grill.

He told his wife he had to handle the call, told her he loved her and hung up the phone. Within minutes, together with a California Highway Patrol officer, he arrived at the hellish scene in sleepy Thousand Oaks, California.

That phone call would be the last words Helus said to his family.

He later died of the wounds he sustained in a shootout with the gunman — one of 12 victims slain before the gunman apparently took his own life, finally bringing the bloodshed to an end. As wrenching as that toll is, it would have been still higher if not for Helus' "ultimate sacrifice," according to Ventura County Sheriff Geoff Dean.

Join Cerritos Sheriff's Station to help Deputy Craig:

On January 20, 2020, Deputy Sean Craig’s home caught fire, leaving her and her two sons without a home or property. Everything was lost in the fire.

Deputy Craig is the school resource deputy for ABC School District, working at Gahr High School. We are asking for the Law Enforcement Community and Cerritos Community to come together to help a first responder in need.

Cerritos Sheriff's Station has joined with Cops 4 Causes to help Deputy Craig and her family recover from this life-altering fire.  100% of all proceeds donated will go directly to help Deputy Craig and her family.

It is with tremendous sadness that I share the passing of Police Officer Matthew Ward on October 8, 2017.

Matt was a graduate of Los Alamitos High School, and held a Bachelor of Arts in Legal Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a Master of Public Administration from Brandman University.  He earned an Advanced Peace Officer Standards and Training Certificate.

Prior to joining the Cypress Police Department on April 28, 2008, Matt served as a Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff assigned to the Mens’ Central Jail after graduating from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Basic Academy.

During his career with us, Matt served as a motor officer, detective, Honor Guard member, Homeless Liaison, patrol officer and Police Explorer Advisor.  He earned designation as Employee of the Quarter in 2011 for his enthusiasm, strong work ethic, and dedication.

Matt was always willing to help out others especially his police family.  He assisted with National Night Out, Open House, Special Olympics Annual Torch Run, 5K/10K Walk/Run, Tip-A-Cop, Read Across America Day, and Every 15 Minutes.  He was also a member of the Social Media committee.

Matt’s positivity, warm smile, superb work ethic and sense of humor will be greatly missed.  Please join me in keeping Matt’s wife, Allison, and their sons, Liam and Anderson, in our thoughts and prayers.
