Track a Turtle: Funding a Hawksbill GPS Tracker
I graduated college in Texas and somehow ended up helping build a conservation campaign tied to sea turtle research in Costa Rica.
Honestly, I know that sounds random.
Over the past few months, I started working with a grassroots conservation nonprofit called Conservation Wild, an organization supporting wildlife conservation and field projects around the world. One of the projects that connected with me most focuses on protecting critically endangered Hawksbill sea turtles during field season in Costa Rica this summer.
Right now, we’re trying to fund one GPS tracker that will be attached to an adult Hawksbill turtle before the field team returns to Costa Rica in July.
These trackers help researchers better understand migration routes, habitat use, and threats facing the species in real time. The information collected can directly support long-term marine conservation and habitat protection efforts.
I think part of why this project stuck with me is because living in Dallas can feel really disconnected from places like this. A lot of conservation work feels distant or abstract until you find a way to connect to it personally.
For me, this campaign became less about “saving turtles” and more about trying to build something meaningful and tangible from where I am right now.
This is still a small grassroots effort, but every contribution helps move the project closer to fully funding the tracker and supporting real conservation work in the field.
Conservation Wild also supports other field conservation projects around the world, including pangolin conservation in Namibia, giant river otter research in Brazil, reforestation efforts in Belize, and women-led conservation initiatives in Colombia. “Track a Turtle” is simply the first campaign we’re building to help support that larger mission.
