Living Diversity: CPDP book
We, the Columbia Pike Documentary Project, are creating a book, Living Diversity, that celebrates and explores the richly diverse cultural makeup of Columbia Pike, in Arlington, Virginia.
Columbia Pike has become one of the most ethnically-diverse communities in the nation, with hundreds of immigrant nationalities co-existing largely in harmony with the historic African-American and white communities that have lived along the corridor since the Pike's founding in 1810.
The strong and compelling photographs portray the faces and places of this rapidly-changing and vital community. The supportive text and oral interviews that will be in the book will add depth and context to the photographs.
We believe the story of Columbia Pike reflects in microcosm the story of what America is becoming, and the experience we have documented will resonate and have meaning for many in our nation.
The book will be published by the University of Virginia Press, and will feature the striking images of the talented CPDP photographers; Lloyd Wolf, Duy Tran, Xang Mimi Ho, Aleksandra Lagkueva, and Paula Endo. There will be a foreword by David Bearinger of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, and engaging essays by other noted experts.
The book will be of use in education and diversity programs, will build community solidarity, serve as a historical record, and will provide a powerful and enriching artistic experience in its own right.
