Coastal Community Foundation

The John C. Calhoun Monument has towered over Marion Square for 133 years. It was erected by Charleston's own Ladies Calhoun Monument Association. This installation memorialized the history these women revered. The consequences have been to cause exceeding pain to the Black citizens of our community.

After much deliberation our mayor John Tecklenberg and City Council have decided it is time for the statue to be relocated.

We women of Charleston are in full agreement with Council and want to express our commitment to the effort. We regret the role any of our ancestors played in causing this pain.

We ask that you add your name to ours to present to City Council this coming Tuesday in support of their vote to relocate the statue to an educational venue. By also making a financial donation to support racial unity in the Charleston community we increase our level of commitment. This fundraiser serves the dual purpose of collecting names of individuals who support the relocation so that we can present them to City Council before the vote on TUESDAY and providing resources to the Unity Fund which was established to advance racial understanding in Charleston and address the barriers that contribute to systemic racism.
