Dear East End Friends,

Thanksgiving is a time of joyful celebrations, yet also a time of reflection. As the holiday approaches, it’s a time to reflect with gratitude on the blessings and bounty that we’ve received. While making your holiday plans and reflecting on all you have to be thankful for, it’s also a good time to think about those who are less fortunate and consider whether you can be of assistance to those who are in need.

 

Citizens 4 Humanity’s annual Thanksgiving and Holiday meal program offers a way to give back locally for a very worthy cause. C4H feeds families and senior citizens throughout the East End based on referrals from local individuals, School Districts, Churches and the Senior Center in Hampton Bays. Last year, C4H and our grass roots group of over 25 volunteers led by master Chef Marco Barrila of Insatiable Eats Catering prepped, cooked and packaged over 150 complete gourmet turkey dinners. These meals were then delivered directly to the doorsteps of over 64 households for Thanksgiving with additional meals for the freezer to be enjoyed throughout the month of December leading up to Christmas. With the current economic conditions, food shortages and steep rise in grocery prices, Citizens 4 Humanity is already witnessing a large increase in requests for assistance this year.

 

We are writing today to ask you to consider making a tax-deductible donation to support the work of Citizens 4 Humanity as Thanksgiving approaches. You can make a difference by supporting Citizens 4 Humanity's Frugal Food Project. The cooking classes for underserved kids in our East End community take place at Barrila's Pastaria Ristorante under the direction of master Chef / Owner Marco Barrila with his wife Sheila co-founders of this non-profit organization. There are many different classes available that include breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks focused on healthy sustainable eating. Citizens 4 Humanity has been serving healthy prepared meals to families in need with a focus on single moms/ parents and homebound seniors on the East End since 2012. Your contribution will support the cooking class programs complete with pantry stocking.

This year the cooking class initiative was launched by our own Liv Kotler, an aspiring chef, for her Bar Mitvah project. Liv put together a program for kids ages 7-15 that included teaching recipes with 3 ingredients and one pot meals. Kids attending received Liv's mini cook-book and prepped meals to take home to cook. Liv's hope is that the kids will go home inspired to share these recipes with their families and friends.

In Liv's Words -- For my Bat Mitzvah project I taught a cooking class for local underserved kids and worked with the non-profit organization Citizens4Humanity. I love to cook so the second I got to choose what my project would be I knew it would have to do with cooking. I put together a simple menu of healthy food that I knew the kids would have fun making and enjoy eating. I wrote out a mini recipe book, and put together goodie bags with a few staple kitchen items they could leave with. I wanted the kids to be able to make the dishes at home with their families and continue to “pay forward” the idea that healthy cooking can be fun, delicious, and affordable. I think that my Bat Mitzvah project is similar to my Torah portion because my Torah portion has a lot to do with looking back on yourself and your journey, and to give back to those in need. I wanted to pass on to these kids my passion for cooking, and hope they find their passion too!

I was very lucky to have 2 of my best friends, Eloise and Kensie, help me teach the cooking class. I love my Torah portion because it reminds me that even though I am fortunate, some people are not. My project gave me the opportunity to help others and show me that even the smallest things in life can make someone smile.
