About Charleston Animal Society

Since 1874, the mission has been preventing cruelty to animals. CAS is the state’s top-rated nonprofit and is an international model for lifesaving success. It is the first combined animal shelter/hospital in the South to earn the American Animal Hospital Association accreditation. CAS organizes the nation’s largest annual statewide dog/cat adoption event and has the most Certified Animal Welfare Administrators of any organization. As a leading emergency responder for disasters and large-scale animal cruelty operations, CAS rescues/cares for 15,000+ animals annually. The CAS groundbreaking project, No Kill Charleston, resulted in the first No Kill community in the Southeast. In 2016, CAS launched NKSC 2024 to build the first No Kill state across the southern US and America's Heartland.
